NEUR 406 Raleigh Neurology Elective
Faculty: Drs. McNeil, C and Freedman, M
Prerequisites: All Required Core Clerkships
Offered: All
Duration: 4 weeks
Meeting Place: Student needs to contact Dr. McNeil in Neurology the week prior to starting to get map to Raleigh Neurology, where student will report at 8 AM on the morning of the first day.
Meeting Times: 8:00 am
Credit Hours: 6
Learning Objectives: To learn the following PROCEDURAL SKILLS:
1. the ability to obtain a complete and reliable history
2. the ability to perform a focused and reliable neurologic examination
3. the ability to examine patients with altered level of consciousness or abnormal mental status
4. the ability to deliver a clear, concise, and thorough oral presentation of a patient's history and examination
5. the ability to prepare a clear, concise, and thorough written presentation of a patient's history and examination
6. the ability to perform a lumbar puncture

To learn the following ANALYTICAL SKILLS:
1. the ability to recognize symptoms that may signify neurologic disease (including disturbances of consciousness, cognition, language, vision, hearing, equilibrium, motor function, somatic sensation, and autonomic function)
2. the ability to distinguish normal from abnormal findings on a neurologic examination
3. the ability to localize the likely site or sites in the nervous system where a lesion could produce a patient's symptoms and signs
4. the ability to formulate a differential diagnosis based on lesion localization, time course, and relevant historical and demographic features
5. an awareness of the use and interpretation of common tests used in diagnosing neurologic disease
6. an awareness of the principles underlying a systematic approach to the management of common neurologic diseases (including the recognition and management of situations that are potential emergencies) g. an awareness of situations in which it is appropriate to request neurologic consultation
7. the ability to review and interpret the medical literature (including electronic databases) pertinent to specific issues of patient care

. To Learn the following PROFESSIONALISM SKILLS:
1. the ability to be a dependable team member with respect to the delivery of appropriate medical care as evidenced by punctuality, preparedness, and collegiality
2. the ability to interact with patients in an empathetic and confidence inspiring manor as evidenced by appropriate actions, appearance, and dialogue
Learning Activities: Clinic and Hospital Rounds with Dr. Freedman, the preceptor at Raleigh Neurology Expected hours per week will be 8-5, Monday thru Friday. The student will not be expected to take call.
Evaluation: The student's evaluation will be entirely based on a subjective clinical evaluation done by the preceptor, Dr. Freedman. He will base his evaluation on the student's mastery level of the learning objectives.

Meeting Place: Student needs to contact Dr. McNeil in Neurology the week prior to starting to get map to Dr. Love's Practice in Greensboro where the student will report at 8 AM on the morning of the first day.
Meeting Times: 8:00 am

Learning Objectives: To learn the following PROCEDURAL SKILLS:
