| Learning Objectives: |
The student will participate in the clinical, educational and research activities of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Clinical activities will include ultrasound, antenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling, high risk ambulatory and in-house patient clinic. Educational activities will include daily morning rounds, genetics conference, ultrasound conference, OB/Neonatal conference, departmental case presentations, and grand rounds. The student will also do library research on a specific topic for oral presentation at the completion of the elective. This is an acting internship although it is not anticipated that the elective student will not do many, if any, deliveries. The department contact is Juli Kidd at 919-966-5096. |

Students will function as an intern on the service and work closely with the junior residents, Chief resident, Fellow, and Attending. They will follow their own patients and also see patients in tumor clinic and dysplasia clinic with the team. Students will have the opportunity to participate in Gyn Oncology Surgery. They will also have the opportunity to attend Tumor conference every Tuesday. |

| Learning Objectives: |
This course is an introduction to the evaluation and management of high-risk conditions that may jeopardize maternal and/or fetal health. Maternal and fetal physiology and pathophysiology will be emphasized. Learning experiences and responsibilities will include rounding on the high-risk obstetric service, participation in the high-risk and diabetic obstetric clinics, and observation of antenatal assessment techniques including ultrasound, genetic counseling, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling. The student is expected to participate in both the clinical and didactic sessions. This is an opportunity for fourth year students to function with supervision at a PGY-1 level. |

| Learning Objectives: |
During the Gynecology elective the student will participate in both didactic and clinical settings pursuant to an understanding of gynecological physiology and pathophysiology. Emphasis will be place on a thorough understanding of gynecological anatomy and embryology. The student will perform history and physical examinations on ambulatory and hospitalized gyn patients under the auspices of the gynecological housestaff and attending staff. Active participation in clinical and teaching rounds will be encouraged. Attendance during pre-operative evaluation, surgery and post-operative care are required to emphasize total continuity of care. Observation of surgical techniques and discussion of the basis of the selection of gyn procedures will be stressed. A significant portion of the elective will include nonsurgical gyn conditions in the ambulatory settings. |

| Learning Objectives: |
The Tarboro Women's Center is an OB/GYN private practice adjacent to Heritage Hospital a constituent institution of University Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina. The practice has a close working relationship with the Edgecombe County Health Department and provides obstetrical and family planning coverage for these specialty clinics. This clinical rotation is designed to acquaint the student with the scope of service of OB/GYN specialists practicing in a rural community. The student will work in the office, hospital and health department. The student has the opportunity to assist in gynecological surgical cases and gain experience with obstetrical deliveries. Call arrangements typically average every third night, but are flexible. |

This elective is designed for the student interested in an advanced experience in GYN oncology and gynecologic surgery. The student will be involved in preoperative evaluation, surgery, and postoperative care; additionally, they will be exposed to the entire gamut of office evaluation of these patients. While the focus will be primarily in operative experience, there will also be opportunities for involvement in clinical research as well. |
