OPHT 401 Advanced Clinical Ophthalmology

Prerequisites: Completion of all clinical clerkships. Third year Ophthalmology rotation recommended.

Learning Objectives: 1) Develop a differential diagnosis for common ocular complaints/symptoms.
2) Learn the ocular manifestations/complication of common systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes).
3) Learn the signs/symptoms of ocular emergencies and how to treat ocular emergencies.
4) Learn how to use the slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope to examine the anterior and posterior segments of the eye.
5) Learn about the various sub-specialties in Ophthalmology.
Learning Activities: 1) Attend inpatient rounds and rounds with the Ophthalmology Consult Service that occur before and after clinic.
2) Attend clinic and or surgery daily, clinic begins at 8:00 a.m. or after morning lectures and ends after the last patient has been seen.
3) Attend all conferences, rounds, and lectures required for the Ophthalmology residents.
4) Spend two nights each week on call with the Ophthalmology residents.
5) Give a presentation on a chosen ophthalmology-related topic at one morning conference.
Evaluation: Based on observation of participation in clinic activities by Ophthalmology residents and attendings, a written test, and one presentation to be given during one of the weekly conferences. Two case write-ups are also required of anyone who has not done a third year rotation in our department.

OPHT 402 Research in Ophthalmology

Prerequisites: Project must be arranged with specific preceptor at least one month in advance. Contact individual preceptors to arrange.

Learning Objectives: 1. Answer an important question or test a hypothesis in Ophthalmology
Learning Activities: Gather data through chart review, patient examination/testing or non-human animal studies.
Evaluation: Based on participation in laboratory activity, quality and quantity of data gathered, write-up of research proposal, methods and results, and presentation of research at a departmental conference.
