OTOL 450 Acting Internship in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Learning Objectives: The student will:
1. demonstrate perseverance in care of patients (II)

4. exhibit advanced evaluation and communication skills in patient care.
5. demonstrate competence in appropriate procedural skills. (II4)

7. generate complete and timely write-ups for assigned patients. (IV1, II5, 6)
8. use evidence-based medicine in the development of advanced directives and treatment plans. (I8, IV3)
9. diagnose and treat outpatient and inpatient otolaryngological diseases
Learning Activities: In the role of a first-year resident, students will participate in all aspects of patient care including admissions, developing an assessment and management plan and communicating with patients and their families. Daily rounds, weekly conferences, frequent operating room exposure, departmental rounds and taking call are required activities. A 45-minute presentation at the conclusion of the rotation on a topic of choice is also required.
Evaluation: The attending will evaluate the student's patient care skills, procedural skills and case presentations. The attending and members of the health care team will evaluate the student's communication and collaboration skills.

OTOL 452 Research Experience in Physiologic Acoustics

Learning Objectives: Research experience in basic scientific disciplines related to Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. The objectives are to:
1. Learn about basic research in auditory physiology, psychoacoustics, immunology and microbiology, or head and neck cancer
2. Learn about research ethics
3. Learn specifics of the scientific literatures and how to evaluation papers
4. Learn to write a scientific manuscript
5. Learn about the grant writing and review process
Learning Activities: Conference: 2 hours, Library: 2 hours, Laboratory: 8-12 hours, and Lecture: 1 hour.
Evaluation: Laboratory performance and conference participation.

OTOL 453 Pediatric Otolaryngology

Learning Objectives: 1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of most common presenting problems in the outpatient pediatric ENT clinic.
2. Demonstrate comfort and competence in the initial history and physical examination of children with ENT problems in the NICU/PICU, with special attention to the airway.
3. Generate accurate detailed management plans for children with ENT problems in the NICU/PICU.
4. Demonstrate competence in the initial management of the pediatric airway
Learning Activities: The student will follow pediatric patients on the ENT service and participate in new consultations. The daily schedule will balance time in the pediatric ENT clinic with opportunities to participate in the operating room. Call responsibilities will be limited.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated based on their participation and performance on rounds, in the clinic and in the operating room. Each student will be expected to give a 30-45 minute talk on a topic specific to pediatric otolaryngology toward the end of their rotation
