2. Each student will directly observe and participate in at least four fetal and/or adult autopsies during the elective period, performed by a resident prosector and attending pathologist.
3. Each student will successfully perform one unrestricted adult autopsy as the primary prosector under the direct supervision of a resident and attending pathologist, including all aspects of gross dissection, microscopic examination, clinicopathologic correlation, conference presentation, and issuance of preliminary and final autopsy reports. |
| Learning Activities: |
This elective provides a unique opportunity for students to explore complex pathologic processes in depth.
1. Students will work with pathology housestaff and attendings as prosectors on the hospital autopsy service.
2. Students will observe and participate in fetal and adult autopsy cases on the service during the elective period. Each student will directly observe and participate in all aspects of at least four fetal and/or adult autopsies during the elective period.
3. Each student will progress to serve as a prosector on one unrestricted adult case under the supervision of a resident and attending pathologist, including complete performance of all aspects of gross and microscopic examination, clinicopathologic correlation, conference presentation, and issuance of preliminary and final autopsy reports.
4. Each student will attend all weekly autopsy related conferences including Neuropathology Conference and Multidisciplinary Autopsy Conference. |

| Learning Objectives: |
The clerkship, based in the Hematology Laboratory, is designed to give students an introduction to all aspects of hematopathology, both anatomic and clinical laboratory. The primary focus is on the morphological analysis of peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymph node material. Hematopathological diagnosis relies heavily on special procedures and students will acquire experience in the correlation of morphology with immunophenotyping by flow cytometry, immunohistochemical studies, and the use of molecular and cytogenetic studies. The student will discover how information derived from these novel modalities enhances the diagnostic process. |
| Evaluation: |
By direct observation and fulfillment of objectives per course director. |
