| Learning Objectives: |
Combined experimental and discussion format with considerable flexibility in the details. Participants can participate in an ongoing research project utilizing experimental animals and man or collecting material available from patients on the wards. Handling of data would be combined with directed reading. Possible topics include the relations between stimuli evoking pain and other sensations; alterations in pain sensibility in patients with organic disease; and new approaches to control pain. |

a. incorporate pre-clinical sciences with clinical problems
b. expand their knowledge base by incorporating this new material learned
c. demonstrate the ability to examine a problem and explain the fundamental mechanisms
d. demonstrate the skills to be a life-long learner |
| Learning Activities: |
The experience will consist of 8-10 two hour sessions with the faculty member. These sessions will be a discussion on all manuscripts/ reviews, etc. and specific study questions, provided by the faculty member [approximately 10 per session]. The student will be expected to:
a. propose questions
b. answer questions as requested by the faculty member
c. provide mechanisms, flow diagrams, new knowledge learned, etc. per paper covered.
The topics will be:
Sexual Development and Determination
Thyroid disease and cardiac function
Parathyroid physiology, bone formation and osteoporosis
Regulation of food intake
Metabolism
Adrenal physiology, ACE inhibitors and pathology
Hormone replacement therapy
Diabetes mellitus Type II |

The student will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the covered material by:
a. asking appropriate questions
b. answering appropriate questions
c. explaining novel or standard mechanisms
d. describing how these reading expand, alter or discourage their incorporation into their already existing database |
