SOCM 403 Readings and Projects in Social Medicine

Learning Objectives: This elective allows a student to pursue studies of individual interest in some aspect of social medicine by working closely with a member of the Department of Social Medicine faculty who is also involved in the same field of study. The medical student first proposes the project to a member of the Social Medicine faculty. Projects may be carried out in Chapel Hill or in the field, typically in the U.S. Readings, library investigation, regular conferences with the faculty preceptor to review progress on the project, and a major paper of 15 to 25 pages on material covered in the project are required. Depending on the specific project proposed by the student and the availability of a faculty preceptor, this elective could be conducted during a four week elective period during the fourth year or in the summer following the first year. Alternatively, it may run concurrently with the second year or concurrently with another elective in the field, lasting two or more months, in some clinical areas.

SOCM 404 International Projects in Social Medicine

Learning Objectives: This elective allows a student to pursue an international project related to social medicine and work closely with a member of the Department of Social Medicine faculty already involved in the same field of study or the same country. The medical student must propose a project to a member of the Social Medicine faculty.

Global Health:
*To explore contemporary issues, problems and controversies in global health through an interdisciplinary perspective.
*To examine the complex tapestry of social, economic, political and environmental factors that affect global health.
*To understand the complexities inherent in improving health on a global scale.*To examine the major determinants of and responses to poverty and health in developing countries.
*To analyze global health disparities through a social justice and human rights lens.
*To understand and analyze the roles and agendas of major players in global health.
Learning Activities: Readings, library investigation, and regular conferences with the faculty preceptor prior to travel are expected. The student will also fulfill all the activities planned with the faculty preceptor

Global Health:
*Students will attend all lectures, do the readings and meet the requirements for all students enrolled in this 3-credit hour course.
Evaluation: At the completion of the experience, a paper or a combination of a journal and photo-essay are expected. If a paper is selected, a paper of 15 to 25 pages on material covered in the project is expected.

SOCM 405 Medical Care/Clinical Epidemiology Research

Prerequisites: completion of first year and completion or concurrent enrollement in Clinical Epidemiology

Duration: A minimum of 4 weeks or one semester if part-time

Learning Objectives: Opportunities are available for participation in medical care or epidemiological research under the sponsorship of the Cecil Sheps Center for Health Services Research and/or faculty in Social Medicine. Students may design their own projects with faculty mentorship or participate in ongoing projects. Faculty in the department have interests in health manpower, health care financing, rural health services, racial and economic disparities in health status and access to care and family violence. The elective may be used to develop a research protocol or complete analysis of a dataset. A major written paper, either the research protocol, or a research report is expected as the product of the experience. The elective can run concurrently during the second year or be taken as an elective in the fourth year.

SOCM 407 Global Health Elective

SOCM 416 Advanced Fourth Year Elective in Social Medicine

Learning Objectives: The purpose of this elective is to allow the advanced student to pursue further research or projects in social medicine that follow from either the first or second year courses offered by the department or extend a project begun in SOCM 403 or SOCM 404. This course will require extensive collection of original data, the analysis and synthesis of data previously collected, or extensive library research and original writing. It is generally expected that this elective will lead to a draft manuscript for publication. The student contemplating this elective will need to work closely with a social medicine faculty member to define the questions, scope, and approach of the project. Students may focus on any area of inquiry represented among the faculty of the department.
