Internal Medicine Clinic

The UNC Internal Medicine Clinic, part of the UNC Health Care System, provides primary care to adults. It is located within the Ambulatory Care Clinic on Mason Farm Road. The doctors are medical school faculty within the Division of General Medicine. They are joined in the practice by residents training in internal medicine. As part of a large academic health care system patients have ready access to specialty care and the latest medical advancements. A computerized medical record links doctors within the system, promotes communication between doctors and allows retrieval of laboratory reports and results of special tests.

The practice encompasses prevention, diagnosis, acute care and chronic disease management and distinguishes itself in the care of medically complex patients with multiple disease processes. It employs a continuity care model that promotes a strong doctor patient relationship. To assist in the care of patients with chronic illness the clinic has developed an enhanced care program that supplements and augments physician practice. Using a team approach, the clinical pharmacists, care assistants, a nutritionist, a physician assistant and a nurse practitioner work with doctors to provide intensive outpatient care to patients with diabetes and those who are taking anticoagulant medication. Patient educators teach patients about their illnesses so that they will be better prepared to take control of their own health. They also provide counseling to patients who are preparing to stop smoking. Our nutritionist works with patients to help them develop health diet plans. Patients with acute medical problems can get immediate access to care through the Same Day Clinic.

The clinic embraces principles of CQI, establishes practice standards, monitors its performance and adjusts its practice to improve care.
