Outpatient Rotations

Curriculum in Ambulatory General Internal Medicine

The Department of Medicine firmly believes that a significant amount of residency training should occur in the outpatient setting. Our residency is currently 50% ambulatory which consists of block months of outpatient rotations. They are as follows:

PGY-1   1 month   Urgent Care Clinic - UNC Hospitals
    1 month   Emergency Room
    1 month   Consultation Elective
PGY-2   4-5 months   Consultation Elective/Subspecialty Clinics
    1 month   Outpatient Clinic
PGY-3   5-6 months   Consultation Elective/Subspecialty Clinics
    2 weeks   Geriatrics
    1 month   Medical Admitting Officer
1-2 months   Outpatient Clinic or Community-based Practice
For outpatient clinic and commumity-based practice residents may choose 1 of 4 University or Community locations.  Residents become fully integrated into the practice seeing patients as well as gaining an understanding of the administrative aspects of running a practice.

In addition to the rotations listed, residents follow a panel of continuing care patients. Each resident spends a minimum of 1 half-day per week caring for these patients. Faculty precept all resident clinics. Each resident's clinic schedule is coordinated with his/her monthly rotations to avoid clinics on on-call or post-call days.

The residents clinics are held in the Ambulatory Care Center.
