The
faculty of the Department of Medicine are outstanding in all respects,
and we have ranked 6th or 7th nationally in NIH grants received among departments
of medicine for many years. Our outstanding research programs are complemented
by commitment to student, resident, and post-resident education and by
superb programs of specialized and primary care, both on the inpatient
and outpatient services. We (both the Department and the Institution) are
healthy financially, even as we adapt to the challenges of managed care.
Indeed, the advent of managed care in our communities provides much needed
educational opportunities for our students and residents.
The residency is continually
shifting focus to the clinic, both here and in certain affiliated practices
in the community. Much of medicine now takes place outside of the hospital,
and our formal curriculum and clinical rotations now emphasize ambulatory
as much as inpatient medicine. We aim to prepare residents who are superb
generalists, recognizing that about half of our graduates enter general
internal medicine practice. Opportunities are rich for those who seek post-residency
fellowships, and we are interested in helping the research oriented applicant
who desires to take the clinical investigator pathway. In short, we aim
to recruit a diverse housestaff, both in terms of background and career
goals.
On a personal note, working
with residents is one of the greatest pleasures in service as Department
Chair. I look forward to the interview process, and to getting to know
those residents fortunate enough to match here. We expect successful applicants
to commit to do their best and we in turn will do our best to help you
to achieve your goals.
Chapel Hill: a special place,
small enough to be friendly, and big enough to be truly excellent.
