The UNIVERSITY of NORTH CAROLINA |
|
Founded in 1795, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the nation's oldest public university and the flagship institution of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system. It is recognized as one of the nation's leading teaching and research institutions. The University has consistently ranked among the top five public universities in the nation, according to US News and World Report surveys, and several of its graduate programs have been ranked in the top ten. Carolina's fourteen colleges and schools provide instruction in more than 100 fields, offering 67 bachelor's, 88 master's, and 61 doctoral degrees, as well as professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and law. The beautiful 689-acre campus is populated by more than 23,000 students from all 100 North Carolina counties, from each of the 50 states, and from over 70 foreign countries. Carolina's academic reputation is matched by its outstanding athletic traditions. From 1980 to 2000, Carolina athletic teams won 95 Atlantic Coast Conference championships, more than any other school in the league. In addition, Tar Heel teams have brought home 25 national championships in the past 20 years, a number that exceeds the combined total of all other ACC schools. |
