About Us Our Faculty Alumni Clinical Services Research Residency and Fellowships

Nuclear Medicine

The UNC Department of Radiology offers two Nuclear Medicine training positions each year. This program is ACGME- accredited and sponsored is by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine (ABNM). This two-year program is also available as a one-year fellowship for candidates who have completed a four-year Diagnostic Radiology residency. Such trainees will be eligible for the ABNM written board examination and/or the ABR special competency oral board examination on completion of the one- year program.

The Nuclear Medicine section is housed within the Department of Radiology and has three full-time, ABNM-certified faculty, one also ABR-certified. UNC Hospitals has seven gamma cameras, all with systems offering SPECT capability (five are dual-head units). One of these seven cameras will be replaced by January 2007 with a SPECT-CT system. We also have an LSO Biograph PET-CT system. A second PET-CT system will be installed in July 2007. The trainee is exposed to all aspects of Nuclear Medicine, including heavy caseloads in oncology, cardiology, nephrology and radionuclide therapy. Excellent research opportunities are available in such areas as PET, SPECT, oncology and cardiology.

In order to be considered for the Nuclear Medicine fellowship, applicants will need to send their curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation (one letter from their residency program director, and one from their chair's office, and a GME application) to:
