Department of Radiation Oncology (919) 966-1101 Clinic |
Most of our faculty are members of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). Founded in 1958, ASTRO's mission is to advance the practice of radiation oncology by promoting excellence in patient care, providing opportunities for educational and professional development, promoting research and disseminating research results, and representing radiation oncology in a rapidly evolving socioeconomic healthcare environment.
Because receiving a diagnosis of cancer can be confusing and daunting for patients, ASTRO has created several up-to-date patient information booklets to explain how the different types of radiation therapy work to cure cancer. To view these materials, please click HERE. (Adobe Acrobat format--free Acrobat reader can be obtained here.)
Click here to be forwarded to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center's "Patient Resources" page, where information about cancer support group meetings, UNC's cancer-related programs and clinical trials can be found.
Another place to turn when you have questions is the Cancer Patient/Family Resource Center, located on the ground floor of the North Carolina Clinical Cancer Center (in the Department of Radiation Oncology). Books, pamphlets, videos, bulletins, and internet access are available, along with a dedicated staff of patient education specialists, trained volunteers (some of whom are cancer survivors themselves), a massage therapist and a patient counselor.
Other extensive sources of cancer-related information include the University of Pennsylvania's Oncolink, the National Cancer Institute's CancerNet, the American Cancer Society homepage, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship's CanSearch, Steve Dunn's CancerGuide, and the Online Cancer FAQ. (Please feel free to peruse our own list of cancer-related resources as well.)
Finally, for those interested, the internet also features excellent resources dealing with issues of caregiving, hospice and other end of life issues, bereavement and remembrance.
