THE SOCIAL MEDICINE PAPER AWARD

 

 

            The Department of Social Medicine announces an award that recognizes exceptional scholarship by students in Social Medicine classes.  A cash prize will be presented to the winner.

 

Eligibility:  Any scholarly paper, essay, artistic work or fiction, or other representational form produced by students for any Social Medicine class.  Students may revise papers produced for class before submission for the Social Medicine Paper Award, and consultation with Social Medicine faculty about revisions is recommended but not required.  Social Medicine classes include:  Medicine and Society, any of the Humanities and Social Sciences Selective Seminars, Clinical Epidemiology, and electives with Social Medicine faculty.  If more than one person has contributed to the submitted work, the Awards Committee should be consulted regarding eligibility.

 

Criteria:  The Social Medicine Paper Award recognizes work that:

 

· Epitomizes the integration of social and clinical thinking;

 

· Applies social science and humanities perspectives to the world of medicine;

 

· Represents creative efforts to convey or represent the experiences of patients,

   physicians, and others related to health, illness, or treatment.

 

Format Requirements:  Written materials may not exceed 25 typed pages, double-spaced.  Film, art, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and other formats are invited, and should be easily assessed and appreciated by a general academic audience.  Non-print submissions should be accompanied by written material that explains the relevance of the work to the above criteria.

 

Deadline:  June 14, 2004

 

Submissions:  Submissions should be delivered to Judy Benoit in Room 372, Wing D, Medical School, no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 14, 2004.  You may also send your entries via email to jbenoit@med.unc.edu.

 

Award Committee:  The submissions will be judged by a faculty committee.  The prize will be awarded at the annual Whitehead Lecture Awards Ceremony in August, 2004.
