THE SOCIAL MEDICINE PAPER AWARD The Department
of Social Medicine awards an annual cash prize to a student who produces
an exceptional work in any one of the Social Medicine courses. The Social
Medicine Paper Award recognizes a paper, essay, artistic work or fiction,
or other representational form that: epitomizes the integration of social
and clinical thinking; applies social science and humanities perspectives
to the world of medicine; and represents creative efforts to covey or
represent the experiences of patients, physicians, and others related
to health, illness, or treatment. Please refer to The
Social Medicine Paper Award for eligibility, criteria, format requirements,
submission, and deadline information. Submissions are judged by a faculty
committee and the prize is awarded at the annual Whitehead Lecture Awards
Ceremony in August. THE CECIL G. SHEPS AWARD IN SOCIAL MEDICINE The Department of Social Medicine honors a graduating student “who, over four years of undergraduate medical training, demonstrates both academic excellence in and practical commitment to the principles of Social Medicine.” Nominations for the Cecil G. Sheps Award in Social Medicine are solicited from Medical School faculty from a list of students who have received an honors standing in at least one of the Social Medicine course offerings. They also are asked to consider “the student’s involvement in a research project which seeks to extend understanding of an aspect of Social Medicine or by clinical work, for example in a community clinic, which promotes the application of the principles of Social Medicine.” The conditions further specify that the recipient should have demonstrated “consistent interest” in Social Medicine. A faculty committee selects the recipient from the several nominations received. A check and a certificate of award are presented at the Student Awards Ceremony in May.
A FEW SOCIAL MEDICINE REALTED LINKS A Publication of Interest...... A recent book of oral history by Fitzhugh Mullan with photographs by John Moses (both are primary care pediatricians; Mullan is at George Washington Univ. and the journal Health Affairs, Moses is at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke) has its own website: Big Doctoring in America: Profiles in Primary Care tells the story of 15 primary care practitioners from all walks of American health care life and includes a wrap around essay about the past and future of primary care. The book was published by the University of California Press in conjunction with the Milbank Fund. The website presents a précis of the book and all of the photos (only a few of which are in the book) taken by Moses of the physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants profiled in Big Doctoring.
