Alan W. Cross

Alan Cross PhotoSince joining the UNC faculty in 1978, virtually all of my work has been interdisciplinary and oriented towards communities. My research interests include assessing the effectiveness of community-based interventions to improve infant health, testing methods for improving adolescent health through school and community interventions, improving the delivery of preventive services to low income populations and exploring the dimensions of medical ethics in the doctor patient relationship.

I teach students in all four years of the medical curriculum and supervise pediatric residents in ambulatory and in-patient settings. I serve as co-director of the first year Medicine and Society course and of the second year Selectives in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Through my teaching endeavors and my efforts to improve medical education, I seek to promote an interdisciplinary, community-oriented approach to understanding health problems and assisting people in achieving better health. I serve on numerous committees from my local school system, to university, state, national and international groups.
