Academic Interests
I
first became conscious of the multiple determinants of the health of my
patients when I joined the new government health center program in South
Africa in 1946 after World War II. I became a member of a multi-disciplinary
team consisting of a physician, dentist, nurse, social worker, and health
educator. In our work with African and other communities we consulted frequently
with anthropologists, environmentalists and nutritionists in planning preventive
and curative interventions. This early experience colored and influenced
my thinking, teaching and practice throughout my professional career. My
most recent academic publication is a multi-authored text, Aging and
Public Health (New York : Springer, 1985), which I co-edited. My
most recent teaching experience was leading a seminar for medical students,
entitled "Old Age -- in Health and Illness." |
