Center for Aging and Health faculty provide care to over 1,500 patients yearly in a number of clinics throughout UNC Hospitals. Through research on the most up-to-date treatment and effective clinical practices, POA clinicians are able to give superlative treatment to older adults. They also practice in continuing care retirement communities and assisted living facilities throughout the Chapel Hill area, including Britthaven, Carolina Meadows, Carol Woods, The Cedars of Chapel Hill, and Carolina House. Additionally, the POA maintains that interdisciplinary teamwork is essential for the optimum care of older adults. Teamwork by clinicians from multiple disciplines often allow for a more holistic approach to patient care. the center was formerly the Program on Aging. Its name was changed on July 1, 2007.
The Division of Geriatric Medicine was created by the Dean of the UNC-CH School of Medicine in 2003. This division includes many Center for Aging and Health faculty and other specialists throughout UNC Hospitals. In addition to its commitment to caring for older adults, the division allows medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty to gain additional training in the geriatrics. Faculty clinicians provide both in-patient and out-patient care through specialized clinics within the Division. Division members include Jan Busby-Whitehead, Andrew Greganti, Nurum Erdem, Anthony Caprio, Racquel Daley-Placide, Terrence Holt, Steve Kizer, Axalla Hoole, Laura Hanson, Holly Jean Coward, Gary Winzelberg, and Debra Bynum. One of the Division of Geriatric Medicine's primary missions is to provide state-of-the-art clinical care through the spectrum of health care settings for North Carolina's older citizens.
Research within the division is performed in collaboration with the Center for Aging and Health and other centers and schools. UNC-CH's designation as a Center of Geriatric Excellence by the John A. Hartford Foundation is an indicator of the university's growing strength in aging and age-related research. Through the fellowship in geriatric medicine, fellows have the option of obtaining an MPH from UNC-CH's nationally-ranked School of Public Health. Most geriatric medicine fellows are participants in the K30 research program and have access to a vast majority of resources including the Acute Care of the Elderly Unit, the Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, the Lineberger Cancer Center, and the Thurston Arthritis Center.
Division faculty are principal investigators on educational grants totaling approximately $5 million. These grants include the Carolina Geriatric Education Center grant, funded by the Bureau of Health Professions, and the Geriatrics Practice and Teaching Program, funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
