Welcome to "An
Ounce of Prevention" a newsletter
for all those interested in the field of health promotion & disease
prevention. There is a great deal of news in the area of preventive medicine
and we would like to take this opportunity to update you on the activities
of our Program and in the world of health promotion & disease prevention.

The November 2002
issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention" will be our
farewell edition for a while. This time we look at the state's report
card for nutition, physical activity and smoking. We also tackle a topic
that has gotten a great deal of press lately- breast-self exam.

Past Issues:
The JUNE
2002 issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention" examines issues
of universal smallpox vaccination, neuroblastoma screening and attempting
to determine who may be at risk for obesity. We also give an update on
medical students doing MPH degrees and the SOM student Wellness Program.
The February 2002 issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention" looks at the
issue of obesity and overweight in the nation and specifically in North
Carolina. We also highlight a student's elective experience at the CDC.
The November 2001 issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention"pays tribute
to Dr. Floyd Denny as we remember his contributions to the School of Medicine
and the Department of Pediatrics. In addition, some of the medical-related
ramifications of September 11th are addressed.
The
September 2001 issue of
"An Ounce of Prevention"
takes a look at a recent article about the Priorities Project, the 20th
anniversary of AIDS as well as some interesting studies published by our
own colleagues here at UNC. We also highlight the North Carolina Office
on Disability and Health and it's recent publication Orchid.
The May 2001 issue of
"An Ounce of Prevention"
highlights recent new recommendations from the United States Preventive
Services Task Force. An article that looks at the number of MPH teaching
faculty in the US is also reviewed. Several students are making their
mark in prevention-related activities and they are recognized as well.
MARCH 2001 issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention" is
dedicated to smoking as a health concern. We review recent articles on
smoking trends, influences, consequences and remedies and recommend great
smoking cessation websites to recommend to your patients. Also, two of
our own "friends of prevention" are honored for their great
work.
JANUARY 2001
issue of
"An
Ounce of Prevention"
highlights recent reports
of high numbers of rubella cases in NC, the decline in Russian life expectancy
and the ineffectiveness of back belts in reducing back injury. An update
on recent and upcoming educational opportunites for medical students is
provided. Opportunities to be involved in exciting prevention programs
from the Department of Surgery are also highlighted.
NOVEMBER
2000 issue
of "An
Ounce of Prevention" gives
you
an opportunity to get some last-minute information on how the presidential
candidates plans for health care, specifically, preventive care. Also,
and update on the Influenza vaccine shortage and a call for a prevention
representative on the tobacco settlement Health and Wellness fund.
August
2000 issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention" highlights
studies on heart disease and smoking cessation counseling as well as new
recommendations from the CDC regarding influenza vaccination efforts this
year. This issue also recaps the Prevention Education Experience that
took place this summer and the upcoming Health Care & Prevention Class.
June 2000 issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention" provides an early sneak-peak
at the Wellness Center to be built in the Meadowmont Community. It also
highlights patient education and the Program's initiative to provide effective
models for students.
March
2000 issue of "An
Ounce of Prevention" gives you the opportunity
to take a risky quiz, reviews an intriguing follow-up to the Framingham
Study that shows PREVENTION WORKS, and patient education websites that
may come in handy to you and your patients.
January 2000 issue of
"An
Ounce of Prevention" featuring
the "Ten
Great Public Health Achievements from 1900-1999", an update of UNC
involvement on the US Preventive Services Task Force, and much more.
