Program on Prevention in Education & Practice
Student Opportunities in Prevention

One important educational goal of the Program on Prevention is to provide students the opportunity to learn principles of prevention in action, in real-life situations, in real-life settings. There are a number of ways that students can take part in prevention projects and programs.

Prevention Education Program - The Prevention in ACTion (PACT) student interest group sponsors the Summer "Prevention Education Program". This year, five rising second-year medical students are working on various prevention projects this summer in an 8-week paid experience. Unfortunately, due to funding issues, we are unable to provide this opportunity this summer.
The experience includes:
taking part in "prevention in action"

clinical experience
letter in your permanent file

Prevention in ACTion (PACT) Student Interest Group - PACT gives students opportunities to learn about and take part in preventive medicine. The group will work cooperatively with other interest groups to inform students about prevention topics of interest as well as provide opportunities to work with diverse heatlh care populations. This year's projects include Risk Watch, a nationwide public education program aimed at teaching elementary age children about fire, water and other safety risks. Students will also be providing patient education on heart disease and HIV at the Interfaith Council Homeless Shelter. Other opportunities are available if there is interest. Carolyn Chu (MS2) is the 2001-2002 President.

Friends of Prevention - The UNC campus and surrounding area is rich with opportunities for students to be involved in prevention-related clinical research. If you are interested, we would love to talk with you about potential opportunities.

For additional information about any of these opportunities, contact the Program on Prevention.
