UNC is located in Orange County, NC, and is integrally linked with the county-run EMS system.  UNC faculty serve as medical directors of both the ground-based paramedic/ambulance system as well as the Carolina Air Care aeromedical service.  Opportunities to gain experience with EMS exist and we will hopefully be able to provide you with some connections to do so, they are currently changing training officers and we will keep you updated.

It is not surprising that many people who choose Emergency Medicine as a career have had some experience with pre-hospital medicine, either as a volunteer or as a full-time employee.  EMS is an essential component of Emergency Medicine and serves as one of the main entry points for the emergency department (ED).  For those considering Emergency Medicine, it would be a great experience to become involved with a rescue squad.  In Orange County, there is one volunteer rescue squad and many volunteer fire departments that offer such an opportunity.

The adminstrative number for Air Care is 966-3044 and any requests for information about potential educational opportunities or ride-alongs can be handled here.  The chances of flying for medical students are admittedly slim, but can only find out after asking... NICELY!!!  The picture is also a link to the Air Care site.
