How do you manage to stay balanced and healthy in spite of the busy med school schedule?

Plan fun time, whether with family or friends
Get active!  Usually with classmates (aerobics classes, basketball) – it’s a double-edged sword:  workout & social time!
I try to make time to actually cook (a change from undergrad)… it’s fun & more healthy.!

What’s the most important piece of advice you would give to an incoming MS1?

Make the most of your time here and the opportunities you have - work hard to study for understanding, but don’t stress out too much – you’ll be tested on everything again eventually… and piecing it all together (while frustrating at times) can be a lot of fun.

What is your favorite artery, organ, or nerve; and why?

The ventral view of the brain (with the brainstem).  Why, you say?  Because it makes CNs make sense (allowing us the ability to do the CN dance), and it’s both beautiful & complex – a perfect example of nature’s awesomeness!

Tell us one of your favorite memories from your first year of med school in the form of a haiku!

If you had a theme song that played every time you entered a room, what would it be?

“Respect” by Aretha Franklin.  I may be short, but I respect myself and expect others to do so, too… plus, it would be awesome if I could sing like Aretha.

Give us your favorite first year “one-liner”.

It’s a toss-up between:
“Don’t sweat the small stuff, and don’t pet the sweaty stuff.”
“I really don’t care what you do on your own time – just make sure you’re getting adequate levels of folate!”  ~ Dr. Toews to the females of the world
