Community Service Opportunities
2006 Events, Lectures, Roundtables Sponsored by the UNC-CH Chapter of the
American Geriatrics Society
There have been several events that we as a chapter have been privileged to be a part of. Our main goal as a chapter is to educate students to the needs of the geriatric population and how it will affect their practices, so many of our events have focused on educational student meetings. Listed below are the series of events we have hosted in the past year.
Polypharmacy in the Growing Elderly Population
Wednesday, November 8, 2006. Dr. Tony Caprio, geriatrician at UNC-CH, spoke on medication interactions and medication contraindications in elderly patients. At this session we provided lunch for students and allowed them to have an interactive educational experience with the clinician on the necessary and different approaches to pharmaceutical care of the typical elderly patient.
Why Geriatrics?
Wednesday, September 20, 2006. Dr. Gary Winzelburg, also a well known physician in our Geriatrics program at UNC, spoke to a group of students at a lunchtime discussion on why they should consider the field of Geriatrics. He spent time explaining the reality of medicine in the years to come, his passion for geriatrics and health policy and the need of all clinicians to have a comprehensive understanding of the geriatric approach to medicine. Again, food was provided to encourage student involvement.
Introduction to Clinical Medicine 2 Special Course and Mobile SHAC
Friday, August 24, 2006. Mobile SHAC is an outreach and multidisciplinary organization involving medical, dental, social work, pharmacy, and physical therapy students. Its goal is to provide team based care via home visits to patients with chronic illnesses who may be unable to access appropriate care otherwise. We were able to cosponsor an event in attempts to better inform the medical student body about their potential role in this valuable community service and educate ourselves on how we can better become involved. In addition, we promoted a new course beginning this year as a special junction to Mobile SHAC that correlated to the second year curriculum of Introduction to Clinical Medicine. In this course, the students were allowed to use their interactions with patients at Mobile SHAC as a springboard for their clinical education and the course’s objectives and experiences focus around those experiences through discussion and learning activities.
Club Day
Thursday, August 10, 2006. Our table was set up on the main floor of the MBRB and consisted of posters showing students and elderly patients and physicians at work – also flyers giving information on geriatric medicine and the AGS chapter.

Friday, April 7, 2006. Dr. Gary Winzelberg, Assistant Professor of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at UNC-CH School of Medicine discussed his reasons for going into the field of geriatrics and why he thinks medical students should consider this field.
Demystifying Medicare: What is it and How Does it Work?
Monday, April 24, 2006. Holly Biola, MD, MPH, NRSA Primary Care Research Fellow, UNC Department of Family Medicine and Department of Preventive Medicine spoke to about 30 students about Medicare, the new programs in place within Medicare, and how Medicare works and/or doesn’t work to help elders with their medical bills.
International Medicine Dinner
Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Forty-four students attended the International Medicine Dinner at the Carolina Brewery. The purpose was to show students opportunities in international medicine in geriatrics.
Tough Talk about Tackling Today’s Issues for the Elderly
Thursday, March 30, 2006. Dr. Carmel Bitondo Dyer, Director of the geriatric program at Baylor University’s School of Medicine, conducted a roundtable discussion with students about contemporary issues in treating elderly patients.
