Welcome!
AMWA is a group dedicated to improving the healthcare and well-being of women patients as well as the personal and professional lives of members. These same principles form the foundation for UNC-SOM’s chapter to AMWA. Here at UNC, members can get involved in a variety of projects and programs. Some of our activities include:
- Pairing students with female faculty members through our mentoring program in order to help students learn about life as a doctor
- Working with undergraduate groups at UNC to provide information on life as a medical student, the medical school application process, and our paths into medical school. This year we hope to extend our outreach into area high schools.
- Planning our Annual 5K Race for Women’s Health: Every year in the fall, AMWA organizes a 5K race that benefits the Orange Count Rape Crisis Center.
- NC Women’s Prison Health Coalition: a new program this year that will involve medical students visiting NC women’s prisons and providing health education to inmates. We hope this will be a great way to get involved in the community and start developing your clinical skills!
- Hosting lunch speakers: Throughout the year, AMWA sponsors several lunch meetings where guest speakers talk about various topics related to women and medicine. Past lunch meetings include discussions of minority women in medicine, parenting and medicine, research opportunities, and balancing a family and a career in medicine.
What is AMWA?
