Eugene S. Mayer, 1938 - 1994
Dr. Eugene S.
Mayer was a UNC School of
Medicine faculty member from
1971-1994. He held faculty positions as Professor of Family
Medicine
and Medicine and was a research associate with the Sheps Center for
Health Services Research. He served as Associate Dean of the UNC
School of Medicine and Director of the North Carolina Area Health
Education Center Program from 1978-1994.
Dr. Mayer received his Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University
and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Columbia University. He
completed his Master of Public Health at Yale University and was
certified by the American Board of Preventitive Medicine. His
career
in public service begain in 1965 with a three year stint in the US
Peace Corps in Turkey and in Washington, DC, where he served as Peace
Corps regional medical officer for the West African Programs.
Dr. Mayer was a fellow of the American College of Preventive
Medicine.
He was active in the American Medical Association, the Association of
American Medical Colleges, the National Organization of AHEC Program
Directors, the Royal Society of Medicine, the North Carolina Medical
Society, and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine.
At the UNC School of Medicine, he served on many committees, including
the Institute for the Generalist Physician Executive Committee, the
Medical Education Advisory Committee, Health of the Public Executive
Committee, and the Dean's Advisory Committee.
