University of North Carolina Hospitals'
Guidelines for Disposal of Regulated Material

Collection Sites

The following guidelines must be followed for disposable items designated for collection by MEDWorld.

a. Medical supplies opened and unused should be placed in a designated MEDWorld collection container (University of North Carolina Hospitals' Guidelines for Disposal of Regulated Material).

b. Medical supplies (e.g. metal specula, suture sets) that may be contaminated with blood  or other potentially infectious body fluid must first be washed with soap and water to remove all organic material.  The item should then be placed in Vesphene or a 1:10 bleach solution for 10 minutes.  The item should then be rinsed and left on a towel to air dry.  After drying, it should be placed in a designated MEDWorld collection container.

c.  No used needles or other sharp hollow-bore devices should be recycled to MEDWorld.

d.  Only medical supplies for MEDWorld should be placed in the MEDWorld disposal  containers.  All other medical waste should be disposed of as outlined in the Guidelines for Disposal of Regulated Medical Waste Policy.”

Approved by the Hospital Infection Control Committee on  April 26, 2000.
