La Charla An Interdisciplinary Course in Spanish Language and Latino Culture for Health Professionals University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Welcome from the Course Director

Dear La Charla students:

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all La Charla students and other interested students, staff and faculty. La Charla is structured around three major topics: Spanish language, Latino culture and interdisciplinary understanding and communication. I hope the lectures, tutorials, structured activities and community involvement opportunities will enable you come to see the Spanish language and culture less as an barrier and more of an opportunity to communicate with your Latino clients and patients.

The first hour of class will be the large group lecture taught by the course instructor, Alan Archibald, followed by a 10-15 minute break and then one hour for the small group tutorials. I formed the small group tutorials so that students from all the schools will be represented. I believe this is a good way to get to know one another.

There will be wonderful opportunities for you to get acquainted with the Latino community by attending and possibly volunteering at La Fiesta del Pueblo, and other events.

This web page is new to the course, so it may take a bit of time before it is fully developed. We promise to try and keep you posted on its progress. Right now, you can find a course description, syllabus, and some details about the course under "Information." This is the place to check to for the location of the class, textbooks required, names of the conversational tutors, etc.

Meanwhile, I look forward to meeting you and getting started with La Charla.

Hasta luego,

Corina Duenas
