Distinguished Medical Alumni Awards

The DMAAs honor two alumni each year who have significantly enhanced the reputation and prestige of the School of Medicine through their lifelong careers of service and accomplishment.

Background

The purpose of the DMAAs is to honor two alumni each year who have significantly enhanced the reputation and prestige of the School of Medicine through their lifelong careers of service and accomplishment. One award is for excellence in professional and community leadership and service and the second is for exemplary contributions to the medical profession or to humankind of such importance as to merit national and international recognition.

Goals

The purpose of the Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award is to honor alumni who have significantly enhanced the reputation and prestige of the School of Medicine through their lifelong careers of service and accomplishment. Criteria for selection include excellence in professional and community leadership and service or exemplary contributions to the medical profession or to humankind of such importance as to merit national and international recognition.

The purpose of the DMAAs is to honor two alumni each year who have significantly enhanced the reputation and prestige of the School of Medicine through their lifelong careers of service and accomplishment. Only two awards will be given. One is for excellence in professional and community leadership and service and the second is for exemplary contributions to the medical profession or to humankind of such importance as to merit national and international recognition.

The DMAA Selection Committee is now seeking nominations for the 2011 awards and you are sincerely urged to submit nominations for deserving individuals.

You will find the DMAA Nomination Guidelines on the reverse of this letter. Please read these guidelines carefully. All nominations must include the curriculum vitae of the nominee, a primary letter of nomination, and two additional letters of support. The nomination materials are due no later than October 1 and should be submitted to Carol Ashby (contact information below). All materials must be received in order for a nominee to be considered.

Eligibility

Categories of achievement:

Excellence in professional and community leadership and service
Exemplary contributions to medicine or humankind of national/international stature
Eligible alumni include:

MD graduates of the UNC School of Medicine
MD physicians who had residency or fellowship training at UNC Hospitals
PhD graduates from a UNC School of Medicine department

Non-eligible persons include:

Full-time UNC Chapel Hill and AHEC faculty (both active and retired)
Deceased persons

Nominations

Nominations should include:

Nominee’s curriculum vitae
Primary letter of nomination
Two additional letters of support

Please note:

All materials must be received on or before October 1, 2010.
The number of DMAAs will not exceed two.
Separate awards for philanthropy and other forms of institutional support important to the mission of the School of Medicine will be solicited via other processes and awarded in separate venues.
As were the DSAs, the DMAA Awards will be presented at the Spring Medical Alumni Banquet.
