Communication Tools
Forums Discussion forums allow you to share ideas, opinions and information quickly and easily. Organized by topics in an easy-to-follow format, they allow you to quickly locate information, find other knowledgeable users, and participate in conversations. Contact OIS to have a Forum set up for you.
Listservs Lyris ListManager is a powerful email list management tool that allows you to create and manage opt-in email lists, such as email newsletters, announcement lists and discussion groups. Create an email list or find out more by visiting our listserv site.
File Upload Tool
The File Upload Tool will upload your large files to public web space and then e-mail you a link to that file, as an alternative to sending large email attachments. You can then email that link to your recipients so they can click on it and download the file. The following rules and guidelines apply: The space is not designed for permanent file storage, so files will automatically be deleted after 7 days. The file will be placed in non-secure web space, so any sensitive documents should be encrypted before uploading. To avoid duplicate file names on the site, the tool adds a random string of characters to the front of your file name. The tool allows files with "unsafe" (executable) extensions to be uploaded, but users are cautioned that the extensions may not be safe. The tool requires you to authenticate with your SOMid when uploading files from off campus. (Recipients do not need to have an SOMid to download your files.) There is currently no limit to the size of files that can be uploaded.
Web Tools
Access Control (for password protecting web space) The OIS Access Control tool enables SOM users to password protect directories (i.e., folders) on the School of Medicine web server. Using the Access Control tool, you may protect your web directories to the following populations: Users with SOMids Users without SOMids Allow access to users without SOMids via the creation of non-SOMid accounts. Note: There is a fee associated with this type of account creation (see 'Custom Web Authentication Source' on the Systems and Database fees page for current prices). Because these accounts are considered unsecure authentication accounts, we highly recommend not using this tool to protect directories containing sensitive data. Contact OIS to have Access Control set up for you.
| | Calenders We offer two calendar applications. A web browser is all you will need to view, edit, and manage these calendars: - CalenderX is a built-in component of standardized websites within the school, though this type of calender is site-specific and independent of other calendars within the school. In conjuction with the Events Folder on such a site, you can:
- Display calendars to the public on your web site.
- Schedule meetings, vacations, or any kind of events.
- Show room or equipment reservations.
- Anything else you can think of!
View the School of Medicine Web Guide for more information. - Calcium Calendar exists outside of the content management system, but it's still a great tool that can be used in the aforementioned ways, with the addition of listing all public calendars in a centralized location. View current public Calcium calendars, or contact OIS to have one set up for you.
