Dennis A. Schmidt

Dennis A. Schmidt has served as director of the School of Medicine’s Office of Information Systems and as the school’s HIPAA security officer since 1997.
In that role, he leads a 40-person division that supports approximately 6,000 computer users and he is responsible for managing an annual budget of more than $3 million.
Prior to coming to work at UNC, Schmidt served as a pilot and department head in the U.S. Navy and headed a Navy information systems division based at Fort Bragg, N.C., as part of the Joint Special Operations Command. He has also worked as a test engineer for Motorola Inc. and as technical director at Science Applications International Corp. in Fayetteville, N.C.
Schmidt has a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's degree in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
