Philip G. Boysen, M.D., M.B.A.

Dr. Philip G. Boysen is the Executive Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education in the UNC School of Medicine, and a Professor of Anesthesiology and Medicine.
As the Executive Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Dr. Boysen is responsible for 63 residency and fellowship programs and over 600 graduate medical trainees sponsored by UNC Hospitals. He has translated his military experience in aviation and deep dive physiology into a special interest in patient safety and human performance enhancement, and specifically the development and deployment of simulation scenarios to enhance patient safety and physician performance.
Dr. Boysen currently practices Critical Care Medicine, attending in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, with a special clinical interest in clinical pharmacology and applied respiratory physiology. He has authored or co-authored over 100 refereed papers and book chapters, and lectured extensively throughout his career. He is a past member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians (ex officio) and was the Chair of the Council of Medical Specialties representing Critical Care Medicine. He is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiology, past President of the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists, and past President of the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs. He has had a history of service to the Society of Critical Care Medicine throughout his career, having served on Council, and the development of the Fundamentals of Critical Care Medicine course.
Dr. Boysen earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. and the Doctor of Medicine degree from Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine), Anesthesiology, and Critical Care Medicine (American Board of Anesthesiology). He served during the Viet Nam era as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Navy, and in an active reserve status as a Medical Dive Officer, and Commanding Officer of the PRIMUS unit at the University of Florida before coming to the University of North Carolina to Chair the Department of Anesthesiology (1994 – 2005).
