In years past, anyone with an SOMID or on the medical school network had view access to all MS1/MS2 online curriculum materials. Based on requests from faculty, students, and the administration, the Office of Information Systems (OIS) has placed restrictions on these materials based upon a list maintained by the Offices of Medical Education (OME). Users will now have to login (on-campus or off-campus) using their SOMid to access these curriculum materials.
Enhanced authentication will now be required for the following:
- The MS1/MS2 Online Curriculum site (http://curriculum.med.unc.edu)
- All curriculum related forums
- The Medical Student Wiki
Accessing the MS1/MS2 Curriculum Materials
To access the MS1/MS2 curriculum materials, you must have a valid SOMid AND be on the curriculum access list maintained by the Offices of Medical Education (OME). All MS1 and MS2 students have been added to the access list. Many course faculty and staff have been added as well (the access list has been populated thus far based upon lists given to OME by course directors). If you are not able to access the curriculum materials using your SOMid, you should first check to make sure your SOMid password is still current (these passwords expire every 90 days). If you have a valid SOMid password and still can't access the materials, send a note to Cortilya Jones requesting access (please include your name, SOMid, faculty/staff/student classification, and a brief explanation of why you need access). Please note: Once you have been added to the list, your access will not begin until 4:06am the following morning.
Note: If you let your password expire, you will not be able to access the curriculum materials immediately after you change your password. You will have to wait until after 4:06am the following day to access the materials. You should receive advance notice that your password is about to expire via your medical school email; be sure to change your password before it expires to ensure uninterrupted access.
What is my SOMid?Your SOMid (also referred to as an LDAP account) is the username/password you use to access web mail (http://mail.med.unc.edu), the online curriculum (http://curriculum.med.unc.edu), and password protected web sites throughout the School of Medicine. All School of Medicine faculty, staff, and students are eligible for an SOMid. All medical students are automatically given an SOMid upon entrance to the medical school. Many faculty and staff apply for SOMid accounts when they first arrive at the medical school for access to our centralized mail system. If you aren't sure if you have an SOMid, contact OIS Client Services (M-F 8am-5pm 966-1325).
How do I check to see if my SOMid password has expired?Go to http://somid.med.unc.edu. Under "Manage Your SOMid Password", select "Change your Password". Enter your SOMid username and current password. Select "Check Expiration". If your password has expired, simply type in your current password, then your new password (and confirm your password) to change your password. If you receive an error message (e.g., The User ID and/or Password are not valid), this may mean that you are entering the wrong SOMid username or password. For more information about how to reset your password, see the "How do I reset my password" FAQ on the Help site. Contact OIS Client Services (M-F 8am-5pm 966-1325) for additional assistance.
What if I don't know my SOMid or password?Contact OIS Client Services (M-F 8am-5pm 966-1325) for assistance.
I have a valid SOMid username/password but I don't have access to the materials. How do I get access?Send a note to Cortilya Jones requesting access (please include your name, SOMid, faculty/staff/student classification, and a brief explanation of why you need access).
