Graduate Studies
- Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP)
The Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) is an umbrella admissions and first-year training program for twelve PhD granting departments/curricula in the School of Medicine and the College of Arts and Sciences including:- Biochemistry & Biophysics
- Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
- Biology [MCDB Division] (College of Arts and Sciences)
- Cell & Developmental Biology
- Cell & Molecular Physiology
- Chemistry [Biochemistry Division] (College of Arts and Sciences)
- Genetics & Molecular Biology
- Microbiology & Immunology
- Molecular & Cellular Pathology
- Neurobiology
- Pharmacology
- Toxicology
Students interested in pursuing these areas of research apply to the BBSP and are admitted to UNC with no formal commitment to any particular program. Instead BBSP students are free to sample from departments or programs of their interest as they complete three required research rotations and their first year coursework. BBSP students are also part of small, interest-based groups led by several faculty members. These groups meet weekly and provide a research community for students during their first year. At the end of the ‘BBSP year’ students join a thesis lab and matriculate into one of the twelve participating PhD programs where they complete their degree requirements.
