Physiologist Hackney honored by Lithuanian government

Wednesday, October 01, 2008 — Anthony C. Hackney, an exercise physiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is being honored by the Lithuanian government for his research and service.

Hackney is a professor and assistant chairman of the department of exercise and sport science in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a joint appointment in the department of nutrition in the schools of public health and medicine.

This month Hackney will travel to Lithuania, where the government will award him a doctorate of science degree. He is being recognized for his research in exercise endocrinology and sports nutrition, as well as his contributions to the Lithuanian and Baltic people.

In 1998, Hackney served as a Fulbright Scholar, working primarily at the Lithuanian Institute of Physical Culture in Kaunas. While there, he taught and did research on human performance and aided the institute in reaching academy or “university” status in central Europe. He is a founding editorial member of one of the first Lithuanian academic journals dealing with exercise science.
