CHAPEL HILL -- The National Institute of Diabetes And Digestive And Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has awarded Dr. Ronald J. Falk, nephrology and hypertension division chief and UNC Kidney Center director, an additional five years of funding for his Program Project, “ANCA: From Molecules to Man. The total amount of the award is $8,067,547. The funding will support 4 separate projects and 2 cores.
This award allows Dr. Falk and project leaders Susan Hogan, PhD; Charles Jennette, MD; Patrick Nachman, MD; and Gloria Preston, PhD to continue their work on glomerulonephritis and vasculitis caused by anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), which is the most common form of rapidly progressing glomerular disease. The research has implications for other autoimmune diseases as well. The award marks the third five-year period of support for this program project.
Other UNC researchers on the team include Donna Bunch, PhD, Keisha Gibson, MD and Jia Jin Yang, MD of the UNC Kidney Center; Dominic Ciavatta, PhD of the Department of Genetics; Kirk Wilhelmsen, MD, PhD, Department of Genetics and Neurology; Hong Xia, MD, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; Rebecca Fry, PhD, of Environment Sciences and Engineering; and Maureen Su, MD, of Pediatrics.
