A Washington, D.C. breakfast sponsored by the embassies of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland was held Oct. 20, 2010 to kickoff an international collaboration in cystic fibrosis research.
Participants included national officials from both Irelands, senior officials from the National Institutes of Health, Dept. of State and corresponding scientific agencies from all three countries.
Pictured at right holding a crystal globe commemorating the project are (from the left): Peter Power, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Republic of Ireland; Dr. Richard Boucher, director, UNC Cystic Fibrosis Pulmonary Research/Treatment Center and professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill; Sir Reginald Empey, Minister for Educational Learning, Northern Ireland.
The joint NIH (to UNC), Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland matching grant totals roughly $2 million a year over four years.
