After program completion, participants will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communicate how low health literacy impacts patient\/client outcomes<\/li>\n<li>Write and speak with simple language and cultural relevance  with patients and\/or clients<\/li>\n<li>Guide students and other learners in communicating health information clearly when providing care<\/li>\n<li>Identify health system barriers to improving health literacy apply corrective actions to prevent, detect and\/or correct them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This program is offered to only 10 clinicians\/ health care leaders who work in health care or academic settings.  Often they teach patients, staff, community members, or students. Coursework requires a minimum commitment of 20-25 hours over a six-month period.  Individual projects integrate knowledge into practice. 20-25 Continuing education contact hours are offered. Participants are expected to commit to attendance and active participation in all sessions, completion of between session \u201cself-learning\u201d exercises, and apply lessons learned in their practice, teaching and organizational processes. Participants will also be invited to teach subsequent faculty development cohorts.<\/p>\n<p>Sessions are largely case- and problem-based and highly interactive. Prior to the initial session, participants complete an assessment of professional self-efficacy relative to health literacy and also define individual goals for the training experience.<\/p>\n<h2>Selected course topic include:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>An overview of health literacy and Integrating strategies into clinical practice<br \/> Darren DeWalt, MD, MPH and Robb Malone, PharmD, CDE<\/li>\n<li>Prescribing and Medication Management<br \/> Betsy Bryant-Shilliday, PharmD, CDE, CPP<\/li>\n<li>Cultural Competency and health literacy: The challenge for North Carolina<br \/> Cristine Clarke, Ed.
