The UNC MSTAR Program<\/strong> provides early-stage medical and osteopathic students with enriching experiences in aging-related research and geriatrics. This research takes place under the mentorship of top experts in the field. Sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (NIA)<\/a>, MSTAR introduces students to research and academic experiences that they might not otherwise have during medical school. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of one of a select few National Training Centers<\/a> for the MSTAR program. Applications for 2026 are now CLOSED.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This positive introduction has led many physicians-in-training to pursue academic careers in aging. These careers range from basic science to clinical research to health services research. As a result, they have joined the growing cadre of physicians and scientists with specialized knowledge and skills. Undoubtedly, these things are in great demand as our population ages.<\/p>\n
