Basically, the one-year Fellowship program seeks to provide more older North Carolinians \u2014 including those in rural areas or places lacking good healthcare options \u2014 with high-quality care informed by best practices and recent research in geriatric medicine.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During each cycle we select three to four IPE fellows from medicine, pharmacy, nursing, or dentistry through a competitive process.<\/li>\n<li>Specifically, the cohort learns about, with, and from each other as they immerse themselves in a practice-based geriatrics project.<\/li>\n<li>Also, the Fellowship creates a unique opportunity to build team care across the continuum of services.<\/li>\n<li>What&#8217;s more, the team delivers person-centered, high quality geriatrics in real world settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funded through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/aging\/cgwep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carolina Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program<\/a>, the IP Fellowship has trained four cohorts since 2016. Although a third class was slated to begin in 2021, we suspended the <span style=\"color: #333333\">fellowship program due to COVID-19 concerns. Details on the next fellowship year are forthcoming.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Previous IP Fellowship Projects<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>2017-2018 IPE fellows worked with <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/piedmonthealthseniorcare.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PACE (Program for All Inclusive Care of the Elderly)<\/a> at Piedmont Health Services in Pittsboro, NC to develop a protocol for addressing unexplained weight loss among PACE patients.<\/li>\n<li>The 2018-2019 IPE Fellowship cohort completed a qualitative study on key components of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/aging\/ipe-geriatrics-fellows-lead-the-way-towards-the-ideal-older-adult-outpatient-clinic-visit\/\"><em>The Ideal Outpatient Visit for Older Adults.<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Apply<\/h3>\n<p>Interprofessional Geriatrics Fellowship opportunities begin in July and run for one or two years. In addition, a stipend for support is available. Applications are typically due the summer before the program begins.
