- Frederick Douglass’ 1854 speech: The Claims of the Negro – Frederick Douglass gave the Commencement Address at Western Reserve College and Academy in 1854 to an all white gathering of faculty, students, and guests. The speech was truly remarkable then and continues to be so today for the humility of the speaker, the audience, the time in our history, the argument made, and the charge to the individual and society at the conclusion of the speech.
