On July 1, 2003, Dr. Stephen Thomas became Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS) in the Division of Health Sciences, East Carolina University. He also served as the Interim Dean of the College beginning April 16, 2001. Prior to his Interim Dean position he was Department Chair, Professor and a graduate program director within the CAHS Department of Rehabilitation Studies. Prior to coming to ECU in 1980, he served on the rehabilitation faculties at the University of Arizona and the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and on staff at the rehabilitation center at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1970.
Dr. Thomas has served as the president of three state and one national professional rehabilitation associations, and chair of his national professional certification commission. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Medical and Health Sciences Foundation of ECU, and the Agromedicine Institute. He is a member of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, secretary and board member of the Southern Association of Allied Health Deans in Academic Health Centers, and vice chair and Executive Board member of the North Carolina Council on Allied Health.
A Houston, Texas native, he graduated with a B.A. in psychology and sociology from Texas Christian University, and M.S. and Ed.D. degrees in rehabilitation from the University of Arizona. He and his wife Melodie have two married daughters (Darby and Morgan) and identical twin granddaughters.
