A PhD Student position is available in the Recovery of Gait and Neurorehabilitation (ReGaiN) Lab within the Human Movement Science (HMSC) PhD Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. (PI: Mike Lewek, PT, PhD)
The student will contribute to ongoing and new research projects related to the role of physical rehabilitation on movement biomechanics, motor learning, and clinical outcomes. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn skills related to the biomechanics, energetics, and motor learning aspects of gait and functional mobility for individuals post-stroke and those with Parkinson disease.
The highly ranked HMSC program prepares students to create and disseminate knowledge in Human Movement Science. Students conduct applied and/or translational research using interdisciplinary approaches focused on healthy and impaired human movement. As part of a team-science approach there will be ample opportunities to interact with colleagues in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Radiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Neurology.
The HMSC program provides training through a research curriculum of didactic and research experiences, and an interdisciplinary emphasis provided by faculty, coursework, and students. The curriculum combines core requirements for all students in the program while allowing for considerable flexibility in designing programs of study to meet the needs of a specific area of concentration and the students’ interests.
Requirements
A clinical degree (e.g., DPT, PT) is strongly preferred, but not essential.
- Experience with clinical research and/or clinical professional training
- Knowledge of human anatomy/physiology
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving-skills
- Previous experience or enthusiasm to learn human motion analysis and computer programming
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team, be flexible and highly self-motivated
Setting
The ReGaiN Lab focuses on mobility impairments for individuals with neurologic injury/disorders (primarily stroke and Parkinson disease). The lab is well equipped with a motion capture system (Vicon), instrumented dual-belt treadmill (Bertec), electromyography with integrated IMUs (Delsys), portable metabolic cart (Cosmed), overground pressure mat (Protokinetics), IMU system (APDM), insole shoe sensor (Tekscan),etc… The ReGaiN Lab is part of the Department of Health Sciences, Division of Physical Therapy and is located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The successful candidate will enroll in the interdisciplinary Human Movement Science PhD program.
