Personal Statement

I grew up in Sweden, in the small northern town know as Skelleftea. Following my graduation from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, I worked as a certified speech-language pathologist, or “logoped,” in my home country until 1990. My first U.S. home was in Nashville, Tennessee, where I completed my doctoral training at Vanderbilt University. In the fall of 1996, I joined the faculty in the UNC-CH Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences and settled in lovely Chapel Hill. My research program has two intersecting tracks: 1) To better understand the nature and clinical management of acquired apraxia of speech and 2) To develop and evaluate client-driven treatment and counseling strategies adults with left hemisphere lesions. We use both quantitative and qualitative research designs in my laboratory, rely on combinations of auditory perceptual and acoustic speech analyses, and we study both stroke and neurodegenerative disease.
