“I lost ten years of good hearing by failing to consider aids of any kind. I fixated on a man from my childhood who had ugly blobs & tubes protruding from his ears. Thus in January of 2015, I walked into the UNC Hearing & Communication Center with anxiety bordering on dread. After five minutes with Dr. Patricia Johnson, the anxiety disappeared and I regretted waiting so long. She and her colleagues made every step of the process easy and enjoyable, especially when it was time to choose the right hearing aids for me. They are thoroughly knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. I cannot recommend them highly enough.” –S.H., Fearrington Village, NC.

“The hearing aids I purchased drastically changed my life for the better. I’m just sorry I waited so long. I now know what all I have been missing. Thanks to the wonderful staff my experience was very easy and stress free.” – K.W., Dunn, NC

“The [hearing aids] I have now are a major improvement over my previous [hearing aids].  Among the better features--better noise reduction, better bluetooth connectivity, finer control with the iphone app, better clarity of bluetooth music and radio, finer control with the comfort-clarity control on automatic, much better noise control when in automobile or crowds.” -H.C., Chapel Hill

“The hearing aids I received here have definitely had a positive impact on my life. I enjoy social outings more; I enjoy television more; and I do not dread phone calls necessary to conduct business. The staff who helped me were very kind and patient and listened attentively to all I had to say; their attention to me was obvious by the follow-up questions they asked me on subsequent visits. I am so glad I chose to get hearing aids and to get them here.” – T.D., Mebane, NC

“My new hearing aids are rather amazing! I hear chirping birds, music, whispering or quietly spoken words. Creaking wooden floors. Wind or rain when indoors. Conversations in a noisy surrounding. Even outside during walks or other activities I hear, and I don’t think about the hearing aids. They’re also quite comfortableA.B., Durham, NC

“I am absolutely thrilled with my new hearing aids and also with the wonderful service I received from UNC HCC. The hearing tests they performed were extremely comprehensive and the hearing aids they recommended exactly fit my needs. They were affordable too! Less than half the price of the “for-profit” (dare I say rip off?) service where I was previously, and far less professionally assessed. I can’t speak highly enough about this team.” – B.W., Pittsboro, NC

“I am seeing a 40 to 50% improvement over my old hearing aids. My wife no longer complains about how loud the TV is and our level of enjoyment is up significantly.” – R.E., Pittsboro, NC

“When it was time to replace my hearing aids, I chose not to return to the discount store, but instead to spend more money at UNC in hopes of a better fit, less unpleasant noises. Exceeded my expectations and I learned a few things.” – E.B., Chapel Hill, NC

” I have utilized the clinic for over 20 years with great success. My hearing has been stabilized as I aged and improved with the technology improvements.” – C.H., Chapel Hill, NC

“As a young man, I experienced high frequency hearing loss resulting from a career flying Naval aircraft. For many years, I was led to believe that I was not a candidate for a hearing aid that would reduce the impact of this loss on everyday living. In 2014, I was referred to the UNC Hearing & Communication Center where I came under the professional care of Dr. Patricia Johnson. Dr. Johnson and the HCC staff determined that indeed I could be helped by hearing aids. Now nine months later, I am enjoying improved hearing in many situations. I strongly recommend Dr. Johnson and the HCC to anyone uncertain about current technology’s ability to improve one’s hearing.” -B.C., Durham, NC

“I had tried hearing aids before, from another audiology clinic and found the experience to be expensive and frustrating. I returned the hearing aids after a month-long trial and many visits back to the clinic for unsuccessful adjustments. Then I heard Patricia Johnson speak at a community presentation, and I was inspired to try again. My experience in her clinic has been fantastic! The hearing assessments performed were thorough; her explanations about the benefits of each device were concise and complete. The education/support process once I got my hearing aids was also helpful and reassuring. Even her office location and parking are convenient! I would encourage anyone, a hearing aid novice, or someone like myself who had a bad experience elsewhere, to come see Dr. Johnson and get reconnected with what you’ve been missing!” -L.M., Chapel Hill, NC

“Dr. Sjoblad made the process very easy because she is passionate about helping her patients hear better! The whole process from beginning testing, fitting and follow-up appointments could not have been any better! I was really impressed with their office’s testing equipment and the lengths that the staff go to help the patient with their needs. Before going to this clinic, I thought that the only way they could help me was to amplify my hearing. I didn’t know that they might be able to correct the deficit. I was able to hear sounds but not distinguish what the word was. My deficit is in an area where I am not hearing the consonant sounds. My brain lagged behind while I was trying to make sense of the words with only vowel sounds to work with. It was very frustrating trying to keep up in discussions and social interactions. Lots of time, I would just give up and hope that I would pick up pieces of what was being said. Dr. Sjoblad and her student were able to correct much of that area where my hearing loss is located. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to be a patient in this clinic!  These hearing aids have dramatically improved my quality of life and my relationship with my husband and family!! I just wish I had done this sooner!” -E.Y., Garner, NC

“I noticed steady decline in my hearing once I entered my seventies. Often I watched TV barely knowing what was going on. I put off addressing the problem until I realized that my hearing was affecting family members more than me. When I asked friends how they dealt with their hearing problems, repeatedly I was advised to use the UNC Hearing and Communication Center. Six months ago, I had my hearing tested at the Center and was fitted with hearing aids. They have improved my life in ways I never expected. Without question, this success is due to the high professionalism of the staff. The testing I received was very thorough, and once the diagnosis was made, my doctor presented me with the pros and cons of several hearing aid options, helping me make an informed choice of which was right for me. Since I got hearing aids, I have talked to several people about their experiences. I am surprised how many bought hearing aids at shopping malls, or from vendors with no medical credentials, and for prices considerably higher than what I paid. I am delighted with the UNC Hearing and Communication Center and highly recommend them.” -D.L. Chapel Hill, NC

“My hearing loss was identified at a screening at the UNC Wellness Center in February of 2013, and what a surprise! The audiologists and staff are very professional and nice, and gave simple explanations for use and care (of hearing aids). I was able to meet with a rep (from a hearing aid company), which really helped me select the aid I wanted. It (the clinic) is affiliated with UNC, where I do ‘all my shopping’. It has a convenient location.” -R.A. Hillsborough, NC
