In mid-June, UNC Anesthesiology hosted its annual graduation banquet, an occasion each year that honors the achievements, completion of training and transition to independent practice of the department’s senior residents (CA-3)s and one-year fellows. In 2026, UNC Anesthesiology celebrated the graduation of 16 residents and seven fellows.

Residency Program Director and Edward A. Norfleet, MD ’70 Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology  Susie Martinelli, MD, FASA, reflected: “Graduation is always bittersweet. We are incredibly proud of our outstanding residents and excited to see the many adventures and accomplishments that lie ahead for them. At the same time, we are sad to see so many leave UNC.

This exceptional class has made a lasting impact on our residency program through their dedication, compassion, leadership, and commitment to excellence. We are deeply grateful for all they have contributed and for leaving our program even stronger than they found it. It has been a privilege to be part of their journey, and we look forward to watching all they will achieve in the years to come.”
