Welcome to UNC Anesthesiology!

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our residency program! As Chief Residents, we are honored to represent a department that has shaped us not only into anesthesiologists, but also into colleagues, leaders, and friends. Looking back on our training, what stands out most is not just the exceptional clinical experience, it is the people and culture that make UNC such a special place to train.

Our leadership team and faculty are deeply invested in resident success. They know us as individuals, advocate for us, and work tirelessly to create a training experience that prepares us for any career path within anesthesiology. Whether it is helping residents achieve fellowship goals, navigate career decisions, or maintain balance outside of medicine, they are accessible, supportive, and genuinely committed to our well-being.

Perhaps the greatest strength of our program is our resident community and department culture. We celebrate each other’s successes, support one another through challenges, and foster a culture where collaboration comes before competition. Whether it’s sharing knowledge in the operating room, covering for a co-resident in need, or gathering outside the hospital for social events, the sense of camaraderie here is real. From program leadership to faculty, residents, CRNAs, AAs, technicians, and support staff, every member of our department contributes to an environment where education, teamwork, and mutual respect are valued.

Clinically, UNC offers outstanding preparation for independent practice. As North Carolina’s public academic medical center and referral hub, we care for a diverse patient population with a wide range of complex medical and surgical conditions. Residents gain early exposure to high-acuity cases and develop procedural skills through hands-on experience across all subspecialties, including obstetric, pediatric, cardiac, regional, transplant, and critical care anesthesiology. These experiences prepare us to feel confident in managing any patient that we care for by the end of our training.

Beyond the hospital, the Triangle region offers an exceptional quality of life. Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh provide the perfect balance of vibrant city amenities and outdoor recreation. Whether you enjoy great restaurants, live music, college athletics, hiking trails, family-friendly neighborhoods, or a quick weekend trip to the mountains or coast, there is something here for everyone.
