It\u2019s hard to believe that three years have already flown by and we\u2019re entering our final year as residents. But when you\u2019re in a place you love, doing work you\u2019re passionate about, alongside people who inspire and support you\u2014it\u2019s no surprise that time moves quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p> We want to share a brief message that will hopefully convey why we\u2019ve felt so lucky to train here. First and foremost, it\u2019s the people. From the top down, this department is filled with individuals who are not only outstanding clinicians and educators, but also kind, collaborative, and deeply invested in your success\u2014both professionally and personally.\u00a0<\/p>\n Our program leadership\u2014while we\u2019re biased\u2014are truly the absolute best. They pour an incredible amount of time, energy, and thought into ensuring that we receive training that helps us grow into exceptional anesthesiologists. They advocate for us at the highest levels and make a genuine effort to check in regularly, learn our individual goals, and support us every step of the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The faculty we work with every day are invested in our education and growth as clinicians. We learn so much from our CRNA and AA colleagues, who are integral to the team and incredible teachers in their own right. And we also have the best anesthesiology technicians in the business. They often know what we need before we even ask and are instrumental in helping our days run smoothly and efficiently. <\/p>\n And last but certainly not least\u2014our co-residents. We\u2019ve built a culture here where we care for and look out for one another. We\u2019re a hardworking group that knows how to have fun both in and outside of the hospital, and we consistently push each other to grow\u2014not just into exceptional anesthesiologists, but into better people. We can truly say that we would not be the clinicians we are today without each of our co-residents, who bring unique perspectives, experiences, and strengths that continuously challenge and inspire us.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n As the safety net hospital for the state of North Carolina, UNC provides exposure to a broad range of advanced pathologies and complex surgical cases. From early in our training, we are managing high-acuity patients and learning hands-on procedural skills\u2014everything from peripheral IVs and arterial lines to central lines, epidurals, complex nerve blocks, and more. We also gain extensive experience in high-risk obstetrics, including epidurals and C-sections. <\/p>\n Because UNC has a limited number of fellows, residents are often given first priority to the highest-acuity cases in the hospital. These opportunities prepare us to feel confident and capable in managing anything that comes through our doors by the end of our training. <\/p>\n And lastly, all of this incredible training takes place in an equally incredible setting. The Triangle area\u2014Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill\u2014is a wonderful place to live, no matter what stage of life you\u2019re in. From vibrant food scenes to endless outdoor activities, it\u2019s easy to find ways to unwind and enjoy life outside the hospital. Whether you\u2019re a single young professional or raising a family, this area truly has something for everyone. <\/p>\n We hope this message has given you a small glimpse into why we love it here.
