\nClinical duties for the fellow take place on labor and delivery where we have 15 labor rooms, 3 operating rooms, 5 triage rooms and a post anesthesia care unit. Typical fellow hours are from 06:45 to 16:30, and there is no current in-house call requirement for the fellow. Anesthetic care is provided under the direct supervision of a faculty anesthesiologist 24 hours a day, with weekday coverage primarily by obstetric anesthesiologists.<\/p>\n

As a regional referral center, the fellow will have the opportunity to care for a broad range of maternal and fetal conditions, including early gestation pre-eclampsia with severe features, super morbid obesity, cardiac and neurological disorders,\u00a0 intrinsic or acquired coagulopathy, abnormal placentation, and fetal conditions that include severe prematurity, fetal airway anomalies and masses, chromosomal abnormalities and CNS lesions. UNC Medical Center is also a Fetal Surgery Center, performing a large number of intrauterine meningomyelocele (ONTD) repairs every year. The obstetric anesthesia fellow will also participate in the anesthetic care of patients for non-obstetric surgery. Clinical care consists of both direct and supervisory patient care. The fellow will also be responsible for coordinating multidisciplinary teams for high-risk deliveries that present either as referrals to the high-risk OBA consultation clinic or as inpatient consults to the OBA service.<\/p>\n
