We are a diverse group that is united by the common goals of providing care that is:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left\">\n<li>Safe<\/li>\n<li>State of the art<\/li>\n<li>Child- and family-centered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\">Pediatric Operating Rooms<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2019\/07\/PedsChildLupaWebsite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"340\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The UNC pediatric operating room environment consists of eight independent pediatric ORs, a cardiac OR, and a dedicated pediatric endoscopy suite. Over 8,000 anesthetics are provided each year covering all major surgical subspecialities including pediatric general surgery, cardiac surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, urology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and pediatric dentistry. Under the guidance of the Interim Division Chief, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/directory\/adam-suchar\/\">Dr. Adam Suchar<\/a>,<\/strong> 16 pediatric subspecialty-trained anesthesiologists provide excellent anesthetic care in conjunction with a caring team of CRNAs, pediatric anesthesia fellows and anesthesia residents. The pain management component of the service was started in July 2009. Specialty-trained members of the pediatric anesthesia division take part in inpatient Pediatric Pain Management service and Pediatric Anesthesia Regional Service under the medical direction of <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/directory\/karene-ricketts\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Drs. Karene Ricketts<\/b><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/directory\/tracy-wester\/\">Tracy Wester<\/a><\/strong>. This important team consults with our pediatric surgical and medical colleagues to care for children with complex acute and chronic pain needs. Perioperative pain management is a crucial element of the pain service and involves postoperative narcotic management, neuraxial and peripheral nerve catheters, and multi-modal pain management strategies. Patients with chronic pain conditions including functional abdominal pain, cancer-related pain, sickle cell disease and IBD, are also cared for during their hospitalization and are provided outlets for continued outpatient pain management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-21821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2025\/05\/PEDS-Anesthesia-NPs-May-25-300x278.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2025\/05\/PEDS-Anesthesia-NPs-May-25-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2025\/05\/PEDS-Anesthesia-NPs-May-25.jpg 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 9pt\"><em>Pediatric Anesthesiology Nurse Practitioners <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/directory\/ashley-king\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashley King, MSN<\/a>\u00a0\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/directory\/joelle-lane\/\">Joelle Lane, MSN\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\">Pediatric Sedation Service<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/our-department\/clinical-divisions-sections\/pediatric-division\/pediatric-sedation-and-consult-service\/\">Pediatric Sedation Service<\/a> was created in 2010 to improve the safety and efficiency and to provide oversight in pediatric sedation across North Carolina Children&#8217;s Hospital. The sedation and consult portion of the service was established as a safety initiative undertaken by the department of anesthesiology. Under the medical direction of <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/directory\/janey-phelps\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dr. Janey Phelps<\/b><\/a>, the service provides evaluation and management of nurse administered moderate sedation, consultation of pediatric sedation candidates, and monitored anesthetic care for high risk pediatric sedations or patients who fail moderate sedation. The service is staffed by pediatric anesthesiologists, two pediatric nurse practitioners and eleven pediatric specialty care sedation nurses.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: inherit;font-size: 30px\">Fellowship Program<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The UNC Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship is in its 14th year and has been through three successful accreditation visits from the Residency Review Committee. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/directory\/tracy-wester\/\">Dr. Tracy Wester<\/a><\/strong> is our Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program Director.\u00a0 All of our fellowship spots are included in the NRMP. The fellowship is an intense clinical exposure to all aspects pediatric anesthesia. The fellows also spend four weeks on our Pain, Sedation and Consult service and four weeks in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Each fellow is encouraged to complete a scholarly project and four days\/month of protected non-clinical time is provided for that purpose.
