In early 2025, joining an editorial board of a major peer-reviewed journal and receiving a faculty development research fellowship have advanced the early career record of Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Alexander Doyal, MD, MPH, FASA, <\/strong><\/a>in peri-operative medicine scholarly excellence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In January, Dr. Doyal was named Associate Editor of Infographics for the journal Anesthesiology<\/em>. Over his three-year (renewable) term, Dr. Doyal will work with other Associate Editors to ensure that development and production of infographics published in Anesthesiology<\/i> are accurate, informative, and visually appealing. Dr. James P. Rathmell,\u00a0Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesiology,\u00a0<\/i>wrote:<\/p>\n

In late February, Dr. Doyal was one of two early-career anesthesiologists to be named Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) 2025 Outcomes Research Fellows. During his one-year MPOG research fellowship, Dr. Doyal will investigate the impact of anesthetic modalities, particularly peripheral nerve blocks, on 30-day mortality following major lower extremity amputations (MLEA). His study aims to evaluate the differential rates of major complications and mortality among patients receiving regional, spinal, or general anesthesia. Dr. Doyal’s study goals are to inform anesthetic practices for MLEA surgical interventions, ultimately improving outcomes for future patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Alongside his clinical, global health and other investigative areas of focus, Dr. Doyal studies utilization of Big Data in research, particularly for collaborative studies conducted by the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG). He has received multiple awards for teaching from the UNC Department of Anesthesiology, including the Faculty Honor Roll and Best Intraoperative Teacher. Dr. Doyal is also a member of the UNC School of Medicine Academy of Educators and the Society for Education in Anesthesia.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
